8 Dogs With the Strangest Coats

1. Afghan Hound

This has to be one of the strangest looking coats a dog could have. The long hair on the body is eye catching in itself but the snout and eyes are short haired as well as the tail. Their long hair blows in the wind making them seem more like a fairy tale character than a real dog. This thin and fashionable dog is also very trainable. The reason their coats are so long is because they were originally hunting dogs and needed the extra fur to stay warm. This exotic dog used to hunt leopards in the mountains of Afghanistan, but now they are domestic pets. They are not really people dogs like many people are used to and they don’t give or like to receive affection. This is actually a very intelligent breed and they are able to act independently.

2. Komondor

This is the dog that looks like a real life mop. His white, totally unique, long coat that is in chords makes him appear less intelligent than he is because you usually can’t see his eyes. But do not be mistaken, this cattle herding dog is very smart. They don’t get along well with other dogs in the house so socialization is an absolute must. Because this dog is so fiercely protective, they need to get used to being around people and dogs and different situations when they are very young. Because this breed is independent he will need creative training methods but don’t worry, he can be trained.

3. Catahoula Leopard Dog

This dog looks like a mutt because he is a mixture of breeds. He may have blue and black markings that look like ink because they are unevenly dispersed. He is a work dog and needs someone to give him a lot of attention and training. Originally from Louisiana, he was bred to chase animals in difficult terrain. They are a very protective breed and want to stay close to their owner. Although they look like a hardy outdoor dog, they don’t do well being kept out of the house. Keep in mind that this breed can be aggressive to other dogs so they must be kept on a leash.

4. Peruvian Hairless

This is a very unique looking dog because they have almost no coat at all except for a mohawk on their forehead! This nearly hairless dog is a medium sized dog that is very affectionate and loyal. They are generally very fast and thin and they love to run a lot. This dog will need a good amount of exercise but you won’t have to spend much time on grooming them or cleaning up their fur around the house. They are also known to be well mannered.

5. Shih tzu

This little breed has long hair that makes them stand out. His cute under bite can be seen in the midst of his hair that grows out in all directions. It’s common that their coat will drag on the ground and their unique look is complimented by their loving and friendly demeanor. This breed was originally bred by eunuchs and they are not aggressive by any means. They will follow you around the house and if you want to get into dog shows and competitions, this breed is very popular in that arena as well. This dog can be good in rural areas or in the city and, since they are small, they should not be left unsupervised with small children who could hurt them.

6. Lagotto Romagnolo

This medium sized breed has very curly hair and a lot of energy. You probably won’t see their eyes because their curly locks tend to fall in front of them. The texture of their coat is a bit woolly but they are still irresistible to touch because they are absolutely adorable. They are an affectionate breed and they don’t shed their coat. They actually have a double coat and it will need some occasional trimming. This dog has a notably easy disposition and luckily they are also easy to train.

7. Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier

This unique looking dog has the longest hair on it’s face making it appear as though he can’t see at all. He is a medium sized dog with a soft coat and he will usually weigh about 30 to 40 pounds. He is a friendly breed but still a little stubborn in the training arena. He also requires a considerable amount of grooming and since he doesn’t need a ton of exercise, you may have time to do the grooming yourself. This dog comes from the farms of Ireland but can do good in the city if he gets his walks. This is a great family dog who will get along great with the kids. This breed can also do good as a wellness dog.

8. Bearded Collie

The bearded collie is a clownish dog who will slip and slide on a wood floor because even his paws have long hair. This shaggy dog is energetic and entertaining and makes a great family or competition dog. One the great things about this breed is that they are always in a great mood and are also very intelligent. Some things to consider with this medium sized dog is that you need to keep them active and spend a lot of time taking care of their coat. If you need a watchdog, this loyal dog is your match.

One of the most important thing to remember when getting a dog with a fashionable coat is how much work it takes to keep it that way. Be sure to look into if they shed and how often, or need their hair cut regularly. If you are a very busy person, a short hair dog that doesn’t require a ton of exercise is probably the best option but if you have kids, you’ll need to look into the dog’s temperament as well. Inevitably, you will always love your dog but it’s good to be informed and make wise choices both for your happiness and your dog’s.
