If you’re looking for a pet that will be around for a long time check out these adorable dog breeds. While most small dogs have a longer life expectancy, a few large dogs do too. Remember, it’s important to get your dog from a reputable breeder so you know it comes from a healthy line. Also keep two things in mind: your dog could live an extra 5-10 years if you take care of it well, and the way you interact with them plays a big role in their life expectancy.
1. Chihuahua
This little dog has a lifespan of 10-18 years and only weighs about 3-6 pounds. It’s not unusual for chihuahuas to live for up to 20 years or more. They can be yappy but they are also smart and respond well to training and they will melt your heart with how much they love to cuddle. They have a ton of personality and, although it’s not advised to have them with small children because the children can hurt them, they make great indoor dogs as long as they get some daily exercise. Chihuahuas think they are big dogs so it’s important to know they may try to intimidate a large dog and get themselves into trouble!
2. Poodle
Standard poodles have a life expectancy of 12-15 years and toy poodles, the miniature version, have a slightly longer life expectancy of 14-18 years. The standard poodle will grow to be 7-15 pounds and the toy will grow to be 5-10 pounds. Keep in mind that toy poodles can become prey for large birds and coyotes so they need to be on a leash when they are outside and they shouldn’t be left outside during the day to keep them safe. Poodles are very intelligent and trainable and need a considerable amount of exercise.
3. Australian Shepherd
The Australian Shepherd which is also known as the Blue Heeler has a lifespan of 12-15 years.
This is a mid-size dog that is extremely intelligent and needs to have a job to do. He is very loyal and will usually attach to just one person and want to be around them all the time. The name heeler comes from their herding days when they would nip at the heels of the cattle. This dog needs a ton of exercise or he will definitely get into trouble so this dog needs to run a lot and not just take a walk around the block.
4. Lhasa Apso
This breed usually lives 12-15 years and are interesting because they are originally from Tibet where they guarded monasteries. While this breed isn’t going to pour it’s affection on you, they are very protective. If socialized and trained, they make a great companion dog. The long flowing coat is a trademark of this unique breed.
5. New Guinea Singing Dog
The life expectancy of this breed from New Guinea is 15-20 years and it is one of the oldest living larger breeds. This breed seems shy at first but if properly trained it can be a domestic pet although it’s not usually recommended as a pet because it was originally a wild dog. They are unique in that they sing when they howl by using different tones in their voices. This medium sized dog is slightly different than a dingo but similar in appearance with their medium length fur and agility.
6. Jack Russel Terrier
The life expectancy of these dogs are 13-16 years and they can be taught cool tricks but won’t be able to unless their owner is really dedicated. This breed is not recommended for first time dog owners because they need a lot of mental stimulation and are hard to train. They are very energetic and aren’t for people who are not going to exercise their dogs a lot. They are named after the the man who created the hunting breed, John Russel, who went by Jack.
7. Beagle
This breed usually lives to be 12-15 years but there are reports of them living into their 20s. This is one of the friendliest breeds and they are a great family dog if trained well. They love to smell things and search because they were bred to track animals. This breed is also unique because they make interesting noises and howl more than other breeds. Many people love the puppy dog face on this adorable breed. They are outgoing and very loving.
8. Miniature Schnauzer
This breed has a life expectancy of 12-14 years and this is one of the most entertaining breeds. They love to follow people around and they are also good lap dogs. They usually grow to be 11-20 pounds and about a foot tall. He is a favorite breed because he has a lot of personality and loves people. You should only consider this dog if you are able to give him daily exercise.
9. Pomeranian
This dog breed lives an average of 12-16 years and their average weight is only 3-7 pounds. This dog is a puffball with a very soft coat. They are a great crowd pleaser and companion dog. They are bred from larger dogs and still think they are large so be careful bringing them around dogs that are bigger than they are. They will need a good daily brushing to keep their fur from matting but they are otherwise pretty low maintenance. Because they have an alpha male personality you’ll need to train them so they don’t think they are the head of the household.
Often times purebreds don’t live as long as hybrid breeds. There are many combinations of small dog breeds that have an average life span of 16-20 years, but of course they are also harder to find. Your dog is likely to have a longer life if it is trained, regularly exercised, and given the healthiest possible diet. If a dog is neglected it will create stress and health problems which is always a very important thing to consider when getting a dog because it is a time commitment.
